Pilgrimage for All: Progress

This page describes the route that was taken by walkers on the Priory 900 ‘Pilgrimage for All’ from York Minster to Bridlington Priory.

Each walking section began and ended with prayer or worship, where possible in the local church. All pilgrims were invited to take part, but this was entirely voluntary.

Thursday 22nd August
Before the Pilgrimage proper starts, there will be a short gathering, for those who are interested, on or near York Racecourse (Knavesmire), where the last Bridlington Prior was executed in 1537.
York Minster at 10am for a short service of blessing from the Minster staff for this stage of the walk. En route we pass through Osbaldwick (St Thomas is the burial place of Mary Ward), Murton (St James), Warthill (St Mary) and Gate Helmsley (St Mary), finishing at St John the Baptist Stamford Bridge.
Distance is 9 miles. Approximate time of arrival at Stamford Bridge is 4:30pm.

Friday 23rd August
St John the Baptist church Stamford Bridge at 10:15am. We follow the course of the River Derwent to finish at Kirkham Priory, where we hope to arrange a special guided tour.
Distance is 10 miles. Approximate arrival at Kirkham Priory is 4pm.

Saturday 24th August
Kirkham Priory at 11am. We walk on quiet roads and field-side paths close to St Mary Westow, All Saints Burythorpe, St Mary Birdsall and up Birdsall Brow following the Centenary Way to join the Wolds Way. We shall follow this to the deserted village and church of Wharram Percy and on to Wharram-le-Street and its church of St Mary. This is the toughest part of the journey involving hills.
Distance is 12.2 miles. Approximate finishing time is 5.15 pm.

Sunday 25th August
Wharram-le-Street St Mary at 10:30am. All day we will follow the Wolds Way; through Winteringham and on to West Heslerton and its church of All Saints. The walk involves some hill climbing.
Distance is 10 miles. Expected time of arrival at West Heslerton is 5pm.

Monday 26th August
All Saints West Heslerton at 10am. We shall continue on the Wolds Way along the chalk escarpment of the Wolds with fine views across the Vale of Pickering. We shall descend just before Potter Bromption and continue to St Nicholas Ganton. The walk includes three hills.
Distance is 7 miles. Approximate arrival time at Ganton will be 2pm.

Tuesday 27th August
Start from Ganton Church at 10:30am. We shall leave the road as soon as possible and ascend the scarp face, praying by the RAF Station when we rejoin the Wolds Way. We will leave the Wolds Way at Lang Dale and visit the church of St James at Fordon. Follows quiet roads and field paths to St Cuthbert’s church, Burton Fleming.
Distance is 11 miles. Approximate arrival time at Burton Fleming is 5pm.

Wednesday 28th August
St Cuthbert’s Burton Fleming at 11am. We shall again follow quiet roads and field paths to descend to Boynton. where we shall rendezvous with the other pilgrim group from Beverley. Together we will walk to the end of Woldgate, through Bridlington Old Town to the destination of the whole journey at the Priory Church of St Mary. There, there will be a celebration Eucharist before feasting in the churchyard.
Distance is 9.5 miles. Rendezvous at Boynton Church with Beverley Pilgrims at about 3pm, onward to the Priory to arrive about 5:15.
