The Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, is to formally open the Priory 900 festival and will preside at the Palm Sunday Communion Service at Bridlington Priory on Sunday 24th March 2013. The service begins at 10:30 am, and all are welcome to join the service.
Archbishop Sentamu said: “I’m delighted to be starting off the year of Priory 900 celebrations at Bridlington Priory with the service on Palm Sunday. I hope to see you there! We’ll be giving thanks to God for the 900 years that Bridlington Priory has been at the heart of its community. The Priory has seen centuries of change, and yet it still carries on the message of God’s love for us all. I would like to encourage everyone in Bridlington to join the Priory 900 celebration events”.
After the Palm Sunday service, at 12 noon, there is an informal ‘launch ceremony’, which features Reverend John Wardle’s new book on St John of Bridlington and a related exhibition. Refreshments will include the eagerly anticipated Priory 900 beer, courtesy of the Wold Top Brewery in Wold Newton, which will be available to try for the first time. The beer can also be purchased on the day in a special presentation pack of three bottles, and will subsequently be available at the Bull and Sun public house on Baylegate.
Priory 900 co-ordinator Penelope Weston said: “The Priory 900 beer has provided the opportunity not only to work with a local business in the community spirit of Priory 900, but also to acknowledge the brewing tradition in the area and pay homage to the monks who brewed their own ale in the Augustinian Priory. All are welcome to the launch at 12 noon even if they do not attend the Palm Sunday service. It’s a great opportunity to come and learn more about the Priory’s history and its significance in Bridlington life today”.
